The Marshmallow Doorstop
A band who made a difference, unfortunately overlooked as we were making our statement as a brother band of the era; The Marshmallow Doorstop from Brentwood N.Y. The band is from from Brentwood, Long Island that premiered cutting edge and Avante Garde Rock and Roll was The Marshmellow Doorstop. The young dudes played not only the rocking Motown sound but had a penchant for Psychedelic,British Invasion but also loved to play the music of Long Island brother bands that had something to say, like: The Hassles,The Young Rascals,The Illusion. "The Marshmellow's" also loved the "West Coast Sound; Tributing bands like "The Iron Butterfly",The Jefferson Airplane even Kenny Roger's First Edition hit "What condition my condition was in" and not to forget The Cream and Jimi Hendrix vehicles. You could see them frequent places like "the Hullabaloo's,The Factory,The Golden Pheasant,The My House,The Barge,Chaucer's Ale House and many other venues and "happenings".
Childe Harold Groupie
In 1966-7 CH played a gig at the Catacombs in Atlanta, GA. I was just 18 yrs old and when the band offered to take me back to NY with them, I went. Richie Bora was my 'boyfriend' or whatever we called guys in those days. They blew the club away with Purple Haze and all the smoke and lights and wah wah guitar that was exploding those days. Black lights, illegal smoke (not much more back then, that came later) but oh my what fun. I can tell you the stories of the next year or two in the candy store basement, Taking Richie ' s mom to her first ever movie and the shows where they experimented with the Sitar (Leo, on guiter/sitar). And then George somebody on base. But always Richie on B3 and his sweet voice. LSD was then the big thing and tripping and being the main childe harold groupie was a gas. I was a topless dancer at the Rock Garden in Jamaica NY, and brought in clients such as Leslie West (Mountain). Fun days. I am now 66 and doubled over with a bone disease, but man did we have fun that summer and those winters on smoke and acid. And that midnight diner on the island after some shows. Wish i could reremember the name of that diner. 4:00 am egg omlets and vodka gimlets. Oh yeah. I know I calculated one year - 365 days running - that I tripped. To this day I am a little wacky, but my only child is brilliant and a fine teacher. Who knew. (Not Richie ' s child, but named for him. RICHIE WAS A NICE MAN and I did him wrong. Wild girl I was.) So if you want a couple of funny stories from a live-in groupies side, I will share what I can without loosing all my dignity (smile). Richie Bora never called his instrument B3, he always called it The Hammond. And he treated it like a baby. Smile. He had an elevator from the candy store to the sidewalk as is so common in the city, upon which he lifted it up/down and off the van on a padded dolly. It was his baby. Quilted covers and everything. I wonder where The Hammond is now? Jyl. B.
